Allergies. Respiratory Issues. Rashes.

There are so many options today when it comes to cleaning products. Why do we need chemical based products that we see on TV —and what are IN these products? I know life gets busy, but knowing what you are putting on your floors, in your bathtub, and in your washing machines is a BIG DEAL.

How many people do you know in your life with a chronic cough, allergies, rashes, thyroid issues, or hormonal imbalances?? If you knew what was in your everyday products, you may start to wonder why so many people have these health challenges.

Let’s look at a few products: Windex, Tide, and Mrs. Meyer’s cleaning products. Where do you look to learn about what is in these products—www.ewg.org is the place!

When you do a search on Windex window cleaner you will see that it received the rating of D. Ammonium Hydroxide, Ethanolamine, Hexoxyethanol??? What in the world are these chemicals that are being inhaled, and absorbed by the skin? According The Environmental Working Group, these products can cause respiratory issues, damage to vision, organ issues, skin irritation, and allergies.

TIDE is my worst nightmare. I can smell it a mile away, it is so offensive to me. When we look at Tide on EWG there are many choices. Even the “Free and Clear” received a big fat ‘F’ rating! Asthma, reproductive + developmental toxicity! Do you want your children exposed to these toxins all day and night?!

Lastly Mrs. Meyer’s gets a lot of hype with being “more natural.” It is hardly natural—I chose the Lavender Laundry Detergent. It received a ‘C’ rating! But the word “lavender” is in it, so it HAS to be more natural, right??? Wrong. Methylisothiazolinone, FRAGRANCE (NO, you don’t want this!!), Sodium Methyl 2 Sulfolaurate—can cause skin irritation, allergies, nervous system effects, respiratory effects.

Your skin is the largest organ in your body—-and these chemicals are touching them all day long!

Here are some options that are clean, affordable, and won’t cause all the above medical issues.

  • Vinegar

  • Baking Soda

  • Essential oils like Thieves or Lemon mixed in a glass bottle with water and witch hazel

  • Biokleen -free & clear laundry detergent, dish soap, and all purpose cleaner

  • Hydrogen peroxide

  • Seventh Generation Chlorine Free Bleach

  • Dr. Bronner’s Unscented Soap

I know that it feels daunting and expensive to ditch the toxic products all at once. Start with one or two items, and slowly make the transition towards cleaner and a more natural home! EWG has a lot of information on cooking supplies, cosmetics, water quality, and food choices. Know before you buy!
